Today is the 13th anniversary of my webcomic! I really couldn’t think of anything to do for a thirteenth anniversary. The only thing that popped into my head was the usual superstitious nonsense about the number thirteen, which I just had no ideas for. That made me think of superstitions around black cats (which I clearly don’t ascribe to, since I have my boy Kong, and I had Jiji before him, both jet black and both a huge blessing in my life) which reminded me of an old folk tale that I really enjoy, called “Wait ‘Til Martin Comes”. In it, a weary traveler comes to an old abandoned house to rest, lights a fire in the fireplace, and as he rests, larger and larger black cats start appearing, each asking the previous one “Shall we do it now?” and only receiving the response “Wait ’til Martin comes.” Eventually when a cat the size of a tiger shows up, the traveler runs into the night, screaming “Tell Martin I couldn’t wait!” I don’t know why, but I’ve always really enjoyed that story and I’ve drawn art based on it before. Maybe I’ll do a short story with Catbeard finally encountering the mysterious Martin someday. In any case, 13 years! Long time. Never would’ve believed it.
